How To Handle Curly Hair

How to handle curly hair if you want the natural look.

If you are like me, you know the absolute hassle of having super gorgeous but disastrously curly hair. It is a beautiful blessing that is admired widely but believe me, it can also be a punch in the gut from hell. Especially when your brush breaks in your hair. Leaving you to wrestle through tears to recover the remaining paddle from your straining locks. Believe it or not this Princess Diaries moment has indeed happened to me in the past.

Now, that the notion of curly hair sounds frightful to you let me reassure you that I do not live through this anymore. In the short 19 years I've spent here on earth, I have stored an arsenal of tips and tricks under my belt to cope with every climate that Australia could throw at me and more. Also, please allow me to add that this post is also useful to people who do not have curly hair. You all know someone with curls right? You all like your own hair to be healthy and lush right?

So please, read on.

So here are the rules...

Do Not brush your hair when dry.

I know this sounds odd, But trust me.

The way to brush your hair is either when it is wet

or when you are in the shower and have conditioner in your hair.

I prefer to comb my hair when I'm conditioning

as it makes easy allowance to get rid of knots and provides something to do

whilst you wait for the sufficient amount of time for the conditioner to do it's job.

However, if you are stying your hair and not simply brushing

your hair before you walk out the door then it is okay to brush your hair when it is dry.

Just promise me you will style it afterwards.

Conditioner is key.

Okay so, shocking as it is some people have gone

their whole lives with out conditioning properly.

They either don't leave the conditioner in long enough,

don't use the right conditioner for their hair type,

don't rinse it out properly

or don't use enough at all.

It's as simple as reading the bottle when you shop for conditioner.

If you don't know what hair type you have ask your hair professional the next time you get your hair done.

Product IS your friend.

If you are scared of using product, don't be.

There is nothing to fear in figuring out what exactly it is that

your hair likes and needs.

I personally love OGX and Tony & Guy as they're range is wide

and my hair really responds to their products.

Also, they are available from your local Coles or Woolworths making life easy.

Always use heat protector before iron styling.

Now, I have to admit, here I am very guilty.

I have lost count of the amount of times I turn my curling iron or straightener off

and realised that I forgot to put heat protector in...

Please forgive me.

And please, do not be as lazy as me.

Think about it for a second, your hair is a living part of your body that needs nurturing just as much

as your skin. But what do we do to it?

We burn and damage it almost every time we use a styling iron on it.

Heat protector avoid this damage by hydrating and sealing your locks.

It also keeps the job lasting longer.

So, why wouldn't you use a good quality heat protecter.

Do not over wash your hair.

Did you know that your hair actually needs the natural oils that your scalp produce?

Well, it does.

We often underestimate how amazing our body is at keeping itself healthy. But sometimes we have to trust that it knows what it is doing.

You shouldn't be washing your hair anymore than 3-4 times a week.

Over washing can cause your hair to become dehydrated and lack lustre in appearance.

So, if you can help it avoid washing your hair anymore that every three days.

Invest in a shower comb.

If you remember as far back as my first rule,

(I sure hope you do)

then you will remember me saying something about brushing your hair in the shower.

Having curly hair naturally means that your hair will be prone to lots of knots

and tangles.

The easiest way I have found to get them out with out pain and broken strands

is to use a shower comb when you have conditioner in your hair.

They are cheap and last forever and more importantly they are a vital tool

in having kick ass curls.

If you are going to the beach put leave in conditioner

in your hair before you leave.

(and once your get out of the water for that matter.)

This sounds super odd yet it really does help stop your hair from getting the full brunt of

damage that our lovely salt water and simmering summer sun chucks at us.

I am sure you are all aware that our hair, really does not like salt.

Our hair does not like being dry full stop. The easy

way to avoid this would be to just not go to the beach all together but get real.

That is never going to happen.

Not when you live in Australia.

So, instead it would be wise to protect your hair with a quick and light treatment of leave in conditioner.

Firstly to seal your hair

and

secondly to replenish it.

I do this by putting a small amount in the palm of my hand then

rubbing my hands together before massaging it gently into my hair. Being sure to spread it out evenly.
